When Windows Live Messenger or MSN Messenger starts up you will get the following error:

"Sorry, we were unable to sign you in to the MSN Messenger at this time. Please try again later.

To let us try and troubleshoot the problem, click the Troubleshoot button."

You can solve this by registering softpub.dll true regsvr32.

  • Click start and Run
  • Now type the following: regsvr32 softpub.dll and press enter
  • Restart MSN Messenger

To be sure repeat the step above with the following lines.

regsvr32 wintrust.dll

regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

#3 Wrong password

  • From my experience the root cause of this inability to connect to the messenger is actually caused by an underlying registry error (windows registry is the database of the operating system). In such a case a Registry Cleaner such as PC-Kitchen's RegistryCleaner is a recommended solution.
